⚓ Keith Williams
Tourism entrepreneur Keith Williams acquired Hamilton Island’s grazing lease with business partner Bryan Byrt in 1975. After Byrt’s death, Williams developed plans for a major resort, with construction of the marina and accommodation beginning in 1982 and guests arriving in 1983. He also developed the island’s airport. The enterprise later encountered serious financial difficulties and went into receivership. His association is therefore both ambitious and complicated: the visitor infrastructure he helped create transformed the island, but its development was far from an uninterrupted business success.
